Before, it was thought that the potency of marijuana was marked by its THC content, and in part, it is true. But now, we know that a variety with a lower concentration of THC can be more powerful than another with a higher amount, as long as it has a profile more interesting terpene.
Recently, it has been discovered that all the compounds in cannabis are involved in the type of effect or its potency. It also explains some doubts that we all have about the chemotype of marijuana and opens the door to new hopeful research. Have you heard of the entourage effect? Well, I invite you to read the following article, where we try to explain what it consists of, and its benefits are.
Here, it is necessary to mention that cannabis packaging plays a significant role in informing the customers about the ingredients with their percentage. It helps choose the most suitable product for you.
What is the entourage effect?
The definition of the entourage effect comes to be something like the advantage of working in a group for doing it alone, or as they say, “unity is strength”, that is why it is called the entourage effect. So what does the entourage effect mean in cannabis? The entourage is the group of people who accompany another in some act or event. And, the entourage effect refers to the synergy that the different compounds of cannabis create when they act together.
The term “Entourage Effect” was introduced in 1998 by Israeli doctors Shimon Ben-Shabat and the great Raphael Mechoulam, the discoverer of THC. At first, it was not considered due to its novelty, but later they saw the potential of combining all the parts of cannabis to improve its effectiveness.
Have you noticed that when you eat mango and consume marijuana, it seems that it makes you high? It happens because this fruit contains a large amount of myrcene, a terpene that helps overcome the blood-brain barrier and allows greater absorption of cannabinoids if the entourage effect has acted so that you notice the effect of cannabis more.
Does the entourage effect exist?
Completely real, it is proven that cannabinoids increase their effectiveness when they are consumed together. It also increases when they act together with terpenes, terpenoids, flavonoids, and even lipids and other components of marijuana.
The mixture of the different compounds that cannabis contains makes each of them better than when taken alone or separately, something that was already sensed. But, it has been demonstrated thanks to studies and research carried out in recent years.
In 2019, a study was published in the journal cannabis and cannabinoids research. It says that there is doubt on the entourage effect of terpenes and cannabinoids. However, it was done only with isolated terpenes, so it cannot be considered an investigation on the entourage effect in itself, it is rather an investigation about the effect of some terpenes on the CB1 and CB2 receptors.
Entourage effect between THC and CBD
Cannabidiol reduces some of the psychoactive effects of THC, especially the negative ones, those that have to do with panic, paranoia, anxiety, or mental lack of control. It may make us think that CBD cancels part of the potency of THC. However, the reality is that it is not because it can enhance its analgesic, relaxing, anti-inflammatory, antiemetic, and other properties.
In a study carried out in 2010 with patients suffering from cancer pain, it was found that the combination of THC with CBD was much more effective than the administration of both cannabinoids separately. Patients who took THC and CBD together saw greater pain relief than when they were given each of these components alone. CBD products can also be packed in marijuana packaging with the liberty of customization to mention your product ingredients on boxes.
Entourage effect of terpenes
Terpenes are molecules that intervene in the aroma and flavor of marijuana varieties. You can find different terpenes, terpenoids, some reminiscent of lemon, pine, and others lavender, etc. The combination of the different concentrations of terpenes determines the smell or taste of a bud. Additionally, they also have unique medicinal properties.
Research has found that Limonene has anxiolytic and antidepressant properties. Other terpenes and flavonoids in cannabis also provide us with benefits, they are used in aromatherapy sessions.
But the best of terpenes is when they are combined with other terpenes, terpenoids, flavonoids, and especially with cannabinoids. Some terpenes can increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier and enhance the way THC binds to CB1 receptors. It means that there are terpenes that help THC better penetrate our endocannabinoid system, so its effect can be greater, and we notice it earlier than if we only took THC.
Entourage effect of CBD and hemp
For a few years, the popularity of cannabidiol has been increasing. With it, the cultivation of industrial hemp is also important. It had taken a back seat until the emergence of this miraculous cannabinoid. In this time, many different formats of medicinal CBD have appeared, in oil, creams, vaporizer refills, or isolated, among others.
All these forms of administration of cannabidiol have shown benefits in people or animals that consume them. But, it has been shown that pure or isolated CBD is not as effective as when it is consumed in conjunction with other compounds of marijuana. That is why the most recommended format is still the “Full Spectrum”.
